Visit us on the web at the IRS careers pages. Duties The Criminal Investigator plans and conducts investigations relative to criminal statutes of tax administration and financial crimes. The work may involve access to sensitive information and collaboration with DOJ and IRS foreign country contacts. Duties at the full working level include: The Criminal Investigator analyzes information from diversified sources, including complex structures with many entities, and may involve cryptocurrency investigations, international transfers of funds, and coordination with U.S. Attorneys. Performs other investigative and enforcement duties, including testifying as a government witness and assisting the U.S. Attorney during case preparation, and conducting collateral inquiries. Obtains, evaluates, and integrates information to identify large areas of noncompliance in certain professions, occupations, industries, or geographic regions. This position has career progression. If hired at a lower grade, non-competitive promotion to higher grades may occur as the career progresses. Requirements Conditions of employment Must be a U.S. Citizen or National. BASIC REQUIREMENTS GL-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL-05 level in the Federal service, involving investigative work related to accounting or auditing of business or commercial practices, and the ability to collect, analyze, and report data. OR Education: One year of graduate-level education with at least 15 semester hours in accounting plus 9 semester hours in related fields (business law, economics, finance, tax law, money and banking). Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) may also be considered as described.

One year of specialized experience equivalent to GL-07, involving investigation of criminal violations with emphasis on accounting or auditing of business or commercial practices. Education substitutions may apply as described. Special requirements include maximum entry age, medical and physical requirements, vision and hearing standards, and other conditions for federal law enforcement positions. Special requirements note : Some medical and psychological criteria must be met at the time of initial examination/test. Education Education documentation: Submit transcripts or equivalent for positions with an education requirement or substitution. Foreign education may be used if it is deemed equivalent to U.S. education. Official transcripts may be required if selected. Additional information Probationary period of 3 years is required. This is a non-bargaining unit position. Telework eligibility varies by agency policy. You may be required to relocate and/or carry a firearm. LEAP pay may be available. Other information includes travel expectations, security clearance requirements, and pre-employment medical examination requirements. You may be required to complete the Special Agent Basic Training Curriculum at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (Glynco, GA) or verify equivalent training.
